The Church of Scientology is thought to be close to buying the National Acoustic Laboratory site on Sydney’s north shore for about $35 million.

The property, at 126 Greville Street in Chatswood, is owned by a syndicate associated with Greg Shand’s Barana Group.

The site has the potential for a substantial development. It has a 10,000sq m office building that has been the subject of a controversial residential conversion play by Barana Group. Barana reportedly tried to rezone the site seven years ago. The council rejected its original proposal for 230 units. In 2011, it rejected a plan with 10 fewer units. Last year it approved a plan with 60 dwellings in buildings of up to three storeys. The church and Barana Group declined to comment.

Barana Group is also marketing The Vibe Hotel in Milsons Point, which has DA for 87 units and 10 office suites. It is being marketed by CBRE’s Scott Gray-Spencer and JLL’s Robert Sewell and James Aroney.
