Cult leader Charles Manson's body was kept on ice for "months" after he died.

That's because a legal dispute quickly ignited over who had the rights to it.

Manson died at age 83 "of natural causes at 8:13 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at a Kern County hospital," the California prison system said in a press release.

However, as late as February 2018, his body was still being kept on ice, CNN reported

According to CNN, the Kern County Medical Examiner's office kept the convicted killer's body in storage because four different people were battling in court for the rights to his body and estate.

Manson was convicted of orchestrating the murders of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate. Because of his notoriety and attempts at recording music, his estate had some value. His life and death are sparking renewed interest because of a new Netflix documentary about him.

CNN listed the people vying for Manson's body as his grandson Jason Freeman; his son Michael Brunner; a memorabilia collector named Matthew Roberts who claimed to be Manson's son; and memorabilia dealer and Manson friend Michael Channels.

Brunner never knew Manson and was raised in Wisconsin by his grandparents. CNN reported that a DNA test on Roberts showed his DNA did not match Freeman's.

The court eventually ruled that Freeman, who is the son of Charles Manson Jr., would get Manson's body. Manson Jr. died before his infamous father of suicide. At that point, the body had been on ice for four months.

"Due to the need for an appropriate storage facility for Decedent's remains, Petitioner entered into an informal agreement with CDCR to store the remains of the Decedent at the Coroner's storage facility in Kern County and the Decedent's body currently remains in Kern County," the court decision reads.

According to KCCI, Freeman cremated Manson's remains and had them "scattered" over a California hillside following a "Christian funeral."
