Roanoke, Virginia - An avowed white supremacist has been transferred to a Virginia jail to face charges of encouraging violence against several people.
The federal charges William A. White faces in Roanoke are similar to one that was dismissed in Chicago, where a judge ruled his online postings were protected by the First Amendment.
White, head of a Roanoke-based neo-Nazi group, had posted the name, address and telephone number of the foreman of a Chicago jury that convicted a fellow white supremacist.
In Roanoke, he faces charges of threatening a newspaper columnist, a New Jersey mayor and several others by e-mail, telephone or online.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Urbanski told White on Tuesday he is entitled to a bond hearing. He has been in custody since October.
