Sheriff: Texas polygamists group behind on taxes in SD

Associated Press/May 29, 2014

Pringle -- Custer County authorities say there’s no indication followers of an imprisoned polygamist came to South Dakota after their Texas ranch was seized last month, but the group that lives in the state is behind on property taxes.

Warren Jeffs is serving life in prison after being convicted in 2011 of sexually assaulting two girls he took as child brides. The Texas ranch was owned by his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A sect affiliated with Jeffs owns land near Pringle.

Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler says he expected an influx, but there’s not a lot of traffic on the compound and it’s been quiet.

Deputy Treasurer Peggy Lindbloom says the group owes just under $51,000 in back taxes.

The South Dakota group could not be reached.
