A woman reported to State College Police on Tuesday that a local psychic business scammed her out of nearly $4,000.

Police said the woman told officers she lost $3,700 to A Psychic Life Reading, 112 Hetzel St. Authorities are actively investigating the incident.

Peter Evans, one of the business's owners, said though the amount of money is high, he is not surprised someone was complaining about his business.

"It's just prejudice," he said. "Every so often, I go through this. I get false complaints about this."

In the past, customers argued the business's offerings - tarot card and palm readings - were inaccurate or bad and demanded their money back, Evans said.

He's also received phone calls, hate letters and criticism from some religious groups throughout the community.

One person even sent him an informational CD "explaining the whole Bible," he said.

"They said my soul would burn," Evans said.

Along with religious differences and unsatisfied customers, the owner has also dealt with theft, he said.

Throughout the years, he said he's replaced several signs in the front of his store after they had been stolen.

Evans said he was surprised by the complaint since the business has been frequently closed for the past couple of weeks because of family issues.

"People want me out of that store in the worst possible way," he said, "They just don't know it's not going to happen."

Police could not release any more details about the complaint.
