Police arrest woman claiming to be psychic on theft charges

Associated Press/October 9, 2015

Rockville, Maryland -- Police say a woman claiming to be a psychic scammed another woman out of more than $77,000.

Rockville police announced Thursday that 35-year-old Shanice Bell was booked on Oct. 2 on theft and theft scheme charges.

According to authorities, Bell told a 53-year-old woman in Rockville that she had been cursed at birth. Bell told her that the curse could be lifted if she gave Bell cash and gift cards, police say. Authorities say from October 2014 to March 2015 the woman gave Bell over $77,000 in cash and property.

Bell left town after the woman demanded her money back. According to officials, New York police eventually arrested Bell.

She is being held at Rikers Island and is awaiting extradition to Rockville. It is unclear if Bell has an attorney.
