Argentina Extradites German Sect Leader to Chile, Clarin Says

Bloomberg.com/March 13, 2005

Argentina extradited to Chile the former chief of a German religious colony in Chile to face prosecution for crimes he and other sect members are alleged to have committed, Clarin said.

Interior Minister Anibal Fernandez said Paul Schaefer was flown to Chile yesterday, two days after his arrest in Argentina, Clarin said.

Schaefer, born in 1921, was arrested near the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. Chilean authorities accused him of a number of crimes, including false imprisonment and sexual abuse of children, Clarin said.

Schaefer, who's been a fugitive since 1996, was convicted and sentenced in absentia by a Chilean court last year for sexually abusing 26 children, Clarin said.
