Germany starts inquiry into convicted doctor from Chile

Deutsche Presse-Agentur/August 31, 2011

Krefeld, Germany -- German prosecutors Wednesday launched an inquiry into a doctor previously convicted in Chile for enabling the sexual abuse of children at a farm run by a religious sect.

Hartmut Hopp, a 67-year-old German citizen, is on Interpol's wanted list after fleeing Chile and moving to Germany.

Germany does not extradite its own citizens.

Klaus Schreiber of the prosecutions office at Krefeld, near the Dutch border, said the inquiry had begun after allegations by a human rights group against Hopp of murder and other crimes.

Chile gave Hopp a jail sentence for his role at Colonia Dignidad, a fundamentalist Christian commune for German-speakers. Horrifying sexual abuse of children as well as torture of political prisoners by Chilean security police occurred at the remote site.
