Weapons seized after Newport biker brawl

Long Beach Press-Telegram/August 11, 2008

Police on Monday displayed dozens of handguns, along with shotguns, rifles, knives, daggers, Taser guns and several thousand rounds of ammunition, reportedly seized from the homes of members of two biker groups after a Newport Beach bar brawl.

Three residences belonging to Hells Angels members in Costa Mesa and Rancho Santa Margarita yielded a weapons tally almost identical to that taken from four Anaheim homes and one in Norco belonging to members of the Set Free Soldiers, which bills itself as a Christian motorcycle club, according to Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor.

More than 20 handguns, up to 10 shotguns, several rifles and numerous knives and daggers were collectively seized from members of both groups, Sailor said. The Tasers came from the Set Free Soldiers' homes, he said.

At least 15 individuals were involved in the July 27 altercation at Blackie's by the Sea in Newport Beach, in which two Hells Angels were stabbed and one Set Free Soldier was hit in the head with a pool ball, Sailor said.

Following an announcement that many of the seven Set Free Soldiers who were arrested on Aug. 6 would face attempted murder or conspiracy to commit murder charges, only Jose Quinones, 42, has been charged so far. He is accused of the attempted murder of Brian David Heslington, 35, of Costa Mesa.

Charged as an accessory after the fact, in the same complaint, was Glenn Arthur Schoeman, 56. Both men were also charged with street terrorism, along with the enhancement of criminal street gang activity.

Quinones and Schoeman are due in court on Aug. 22 for arraignment.

Set Free Soldiers founder and Pastor Phillip Russell Aguilar, 60, of Anaheim, his 29-year-old son, Matthew Aguilar, and Michael Timanus Jr., also 29, were all charged with felony counts of illegal weapons possession.

The Aguilars were charged with possession of illegal brass knuckles, and Matthew John Aguilar was also charged with active participation in a street gang.

All three are due in court on Sept. 25 for arraignment.

John Phillip Lloyd, 41, of Costa Mesa, listed as a member of the Hells Angels, was charged with two felony counts of having a concealed weapon in a vehicle and being a gang member carrying a loaded firearm in public.

Also arrested were Hells Angels members Heslington, Scott Michael Guinn and Rodrigo Requejo.

Heslington, who sought his own medical attention after being stabbed, is expected to face drug charges, along with Guinn. Requejo is expected to face charges of assault and battery, street terrorism and committing an offense for the benefit of a criminal street gang, Sailor said.
