Bins removed after campaign

Weston & Somerset Mercury, UK/October 10, 2008

Campaigners have successfully campaigned for the removal of recycling bins in Weston after it emerged they did not belong to a charity.

Two clothes and shoes bins appeared in Tesco's main store car park belong to the Gaia-Movement Trust Living Earth Green World.

The organisation is run by the Tvind group, which is not a registered charity.

A supermarket spokesman confirmed today that they have now been removed.

Mike Durham, who runs the Tvind Alert pressure group website, and Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Mike Bell, had campaigned for them to be go.

Mr Durham, who has been tracking the Tvind group for years, said: "It is a network of companies run by international organisations.

"It is a cult more than anything and the majority of money goes on operating costs."

Mr Bell said: "These were not council recycling bins, and there are serious questions marks about what happens to the proceeds from the sale of clothes and shoes.

A Tesco spokesman confirmed earlier to day that they have now been removed.
