Hearing of man accused of setting fire continued

Washington Observer-Reporter/January 2, 2004

The case of a Washington man accused of setting his sister's car on fire was continued Wednesday after the commonwealth failed to subpoena a witness for the Central Court hearing before District Justice Gary Havelka. No new hearing date was announced.

Shawn Harshey, 41, of 866 Broad St., was charged with arson after he allegedly broke windows and headlights, and flattened tires on a car owned by Vaughan and Corinne Dubielak on Nov. 2. The 1983 Buick was parked on Shannon Avenue.

A witness told police Harshey placed a paper bag under the passenger seat and set it on fire.

Harshey remains in Washington County Jail on a separate detainer.

Appeal of decision on bail request denied

An Amwell Township man who federal authorities say led a Ku Klux Klan splinter group and planned to attack abortion clinics will remain in jail awaiting trial.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week turned away David Wayne Hull's appeal of a Pittsburgh federal judge's decision not to grant him bail on firearms and explosives charges.

Hull, 40, has been in federal custody since February, when a grand jury charged him with giving a disassembled pipe bomb to a person who is cooperating with federal agents in a firearms investigation.

Hull's attorney, W. Penn Hackney, declined to comment.

Hull is charged with possessing two bombs and a gun silencer last summer, another bomb last fall and teaching people about making or using pipe bombs last year.

Federal investigators also said they had evidence Hull intended to attack abortion clinics with hand grenades, bombs and mine blasting caps.
