Employees: Dentist Made Us Recite Scientology

NBC 5 Chicago/September 5, 2007

Chicago -- A Chicago dentist is facing a lawsuit, accused of harassing his employees and forcing his scientology beliefs on them.

Federal attorney Ann Henry said many who worked at the office of dentist James Orrington went years without complaining, and now the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit against Orrington, who works out of a small office at 8244 S. Ashland Ave.

Ten employees -- one man and nine women -- allege that they had to follow unusual orders to get paid for their work and recite passages in Scientology, the religion made famous by many of its celebrity followers.

The nine female employees also allege they were sexually harassed.

Orrington was working Tuesday and declined to comment on the case.

According to court papers, the religious and sexual harassment began as far back as 1998.

The EEOC has been investigating this case since 2005 and said when employees threatened to complain about Orrington's practices, they were fired.

The case has been turned over to a federal judge who will soon set a court date. All of the alleged victims have since stopped working for Orrington.
