As Leah Remini made the rounds blasting Scientology with revelations from her new tell-all, “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” including a number of unflattering stories about the church’s most famous member, Tom Cruise, the star was quietly pledging his allegiance to the religion at a Scientology super summit.
Photos on social media revealed that the “Mission: Impossible” star attended the organization’s annual International Association of Scientologists gala at late leader L. Ron Hubbard’s home in England, Saint Hill Manor, the weekend of Oct. 23.
The gala, which Scientology brass say was attended by more than 7,500 guests, celebrated the “sweeping accomplishment and spectacular triumph” of the group’s “impact as a planetary force for the humanitarian uplift and social betterment.” Leader David Miscavige gave a three-hour speech and gave out the church’s “Freedom Medals,” and the event included a black-tie Patrons Ball.
Images on social media showed Cruise on the scene. Gabriela Guncčíková, of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who performed at the event, posted a photo of Cruise on Facebook with a caption written in Czech stating she was at a “charity event” where “I was met by a very great actor and we talked. Super man.”
In another shot, Cruise poses in a tux with a Freedom Medal winner. The pics were first noted by Scientology critic Tony Ortega, who posted on his blog, Underground Bunker, that “there’s plenty of evidence that Cruise is just as dedicated to Scientology as ever,” and, it was “the first time we’ve seen Tom actually inside the IAS party since he was awarded his own medal — the Freedom Medal of Valor — back in 2004.”
Remini’s book came out Tuesday, but excerpts leaked out on Oct. 26.
The lifelong member who fled the church claims she got Cruise’s attention when she made a $1 million donation, and that Cruise “seemed like a child who had never been told no” who liked to play hide-and-seek and yelled at his staff over cookie dough.
A rep for Cruise did not get back to us.
