Teen in sect cleansing ritual undergoes operation

The Star, Malaysia/October 5, 2008

Kuala Lumpur - The 15-year-old girl who took part in a ritual cleansing between two families that led to the death of her uncle and aunt, underwent surgery yesterday.

She suffered multiple head, facial and bodily injuries, and fell unconscious when her family and relatives assaulted one another with helmets and broomsticks at her flat in Jalan Imbi.

Both families are followers of the banned deviant group Al-Arqam.

The teenager was put under observation at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and under tight police monitoring.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Ku Chin Wah said police had taken urine samples from four suspects remanded to assist in investigations.

The four suspects included a 50-year-old man and his 23-year-old son, who is mentally ill and had claimed he had received wahyu (divine revelation) that he could cure people. He was recently sacked by City Hall for indiscipline.
