The man authorities accuse of leading a bizarre, violent Amish sect in eastern Ohio has been ordered held without bail, along with two of his sons and his son-in-law.

Sam Mullet, whom the local sheriff called 'evil,' was arrested last month and charged with orchestrating a spate of attacks that terrified the Amish community.

Six of Mullet's followers were arrested on allegations they broke into the homes of Amish men and held them down while they sheared off their beards and hair.

A federal judge found Mullet and three of the men were a danger to the Amish community and should not be released on bail pending the outcome of their trial on charges of committing sectarian hate crimes against other Amish.

'I consider these violent acts. They are a danger to the Amish community,' Magistrate Judge George Limbert said, according to the Tribune Chronicle of Warren, Ohio.

During five hours of testimony, an FBI agent and the sheriff of Jefferson County, Ohio, described Mullet's role in the attacks on several members of the Amish community across three counties in Ohio.

From his compound outside of a small town in rural Jefferson County, Ohio, Mullet leads dozens of families with an iron fist. According to the FBI, those who disagree with him are beaten. Others are punished by being made to sleep in a chicken coop for days on end -- even in the dead of winter.
