Priest Faces New Charges of Molesting Boys

Associated Press/November 3, 2007

Chicago -- A Jesuit priest convicted in Wisconsin of indecent behavior with boys has been taken into custody by federal agents in Chicago. The new charges say he traveled to Switzerland and Austria seven years ago to have sex with a minor.

The Reverend Donald McGuire has been free on bond while appealing the Walworth County conviction and his sentence to seven years in prison. Those charges allege he molested two boys in the 1960s while on retreats.

Wisconsin authorities took the 77-year-old McGuire into custody Thursday after a court appearance as part of his appeal. They say he didn't keep his sex offender registry updated.

He was turned over to Immigration and Customs agents on the new charge yesterday.

An affidavit says the Jesuit order placed restrictions on McGuire' contacts with boys and young men as early as 1991, but he continued to travel alone with teen boys, including one who was 13 when the alleged abuse started in 1999.
