Calls to end cult

The Fiji Times/June 12, 2011

By Maciu Malo

The Nadroga/Navosa Provincial Council is requesting the Office of the Commissioner Western to step in and put an end to cults or religious groups that stop children from attending school.

Members of the Mahanaim Church and the Kadrala Church in Navosa and Baravi still refuse to send their children to school ù despite a directive from the Ministry of Education.

More than 15 children are home-schooled and the groups are adamant that according to their beliefs, children should be kept away from the country's school system.

Assistant Roko Tui Navosa Marika Nagata said visits were made by the police, provincial council and the district officer in Sigatoka to persuade parents to send their children to school.

He said despite the attempt, the religious groups continued to teach their children at home.

Mr Nagata said the visits failed to convince the parents, hence his appeal to higher authority.

A report will be compiled for the Commissioner Western.
