Former Mormon youth counselor sentenced to six months in prison

Associated Press/January 4, 2005

Sacramento -- A former Mormon youth counselor pleaded guilty today to a misdemeanor count of child annoyance and was sentenced to six months in jail.

Michael Scott Woodbury originally faced 30 felony counts of lewd acts with a minor. But attorneys say questions about the seriousness of the offenses and the legality of a taped phone call that prompted the investigation led to the plea deal.

The victim's mother thought the sentence was too lenient.

Woodbury met the boy when he was 12 and was arrested when the boy was 15 or 16.
