LDS children's book on 'overcoming homosexuality' finds a home on WalMart shelves

More than 100 WalMart stores in the Intermountain West are stocking a new children's book aimed at Mormon families to help in overcoming homosexuality.

Chased by an Elephant: The Gospel Truth About Today's Stampeding Sexuality, was authored by Janice Barrett Graham, wife of Stephen Graham, President of the anti-gay organization, Standard of Liberty — an LDS-oriented educational foundation.

Janice Graham said she wrote Chased by an Elephant to "help shed the clear light of truth on today's dark and tangled ideas about male and female, proper gender roles, the law of chastity, and the God-given sexual appetite," according to the book's introduction.

"The number of our young people involved in sexual sins has greatly increased in recent years. Some of the most stalwart-seeming youth find themselves involved in pornography, fornication, promiscuity, homosexuality, and the like," she writes.

The book, published in May, concludes that counseling, truth and accepting Jesus is the path to over coming homosexuality.

On a recent blog post, "Beware the Gay Suicide Card," Janice Graham offered her own theory on hearing over and over that gays commit suicide if they aren't accepted by their family or church:

"Could it be that there are hidden factors at work that contribute to gay youth suicides?" she asked.

"How about encouragement to adopt a popularized but unnatural sexual label? How about addiction to soul-killing same-sex pornography? How about being introduced by adults to behaviors too heinous to mention in polite society? How about being told they are forever homosexual and thinking they will never have a normal family life?"

The Grahams claim that their son, Andrew, resisted homosexual urges and is now living happily as an "ex-gay" man.

The deal to stock Chased by an Elephant at WalMart was arranged by Brigham Distributing and announced on Standard of Liberty's website. The book is also available for order on Barnes & Noble, Borders and Amazon websites.
