Cult member to plead guilty to reduced charge

The Associated Press/October 30, 2009

Baltimore - A member of a defunct religious cult is planning to plead guilty to a reduced charge related to the starvation death of a toddler.

The attorney for Marcus Cobbs says he will plead guilty Friday to accessory after the fact.

Cobbs had been accused of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Authorities say he and three other cult members starved 1-year-old Javon Thompson after the boy did not say "Amen" after meals.

After Javon died, police say the cult members stuffed his body in a suitcase and drove it from Baltimore to Philadelphia, where it was hidden for more than a year.

Javon's mother pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death. She is expected to testify against the three other cult members, who still face murder charges.
