Uganda: Kanungu Council to Take Over Kibwetere's Land

The Monitor, Uganda/February 11, 2008

Kanungu Town Council is set to attract investors to develop the site of the former 'Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God' that was led by Joseph Kibwetere in 2000.

The area LC III Chairman, Mr Godfrey Karabenda told residents at a Budget Conference last Thursday that the town council has received applications from many people who would wish to develop the area for tourism but is awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Internal Affairs that is handling issues related to the March, 17, 2000 inferno.

At this site eight years ago, more than 500 people perished in an inferno. That fateful Friday is still fresh in the minds of the residents and Ugandans, especially those whose relatives perished in the fire.

Police investigations after the fire discovered mass graves in different parts of the country, raising the death toll to over 1,000.

Those who died included mainly Ugandan and some Congolese believers of a cult called the 'Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God.'
