Scientology Infiltrating Schools Under Guise Of Drug Prevention, Civil Liberties Union Claims

Hungary Today/February 17, 2015

The state agency for schools (Klik) provides up-to-date information to schools and school districts about the operation and methods of the Church of Scientology and their front groups in Hungary, the agency said.

Responding to an enquiry by the state news agency MTI concerning a recent report by the Civil Liberties Union (TASZ) showing that the church had carried out self-promotion campaigns in several schools with state funding under the guise of drug prevention initiatives, the agency insisted that schools are required to screen organisations before hosting such events.

The Civil Liberties Union earlier turned to the agency to find out whether there was any proof of cooperation between organisations close to the Church of Scientology and schools. The church organised programmes with state funding or in cooperation with the schools, the human rights groups said, citing the agency’s documented response.

“TASZ requests decision-makers to carry out a comprehensive enquiry into Scientologist infiltration attempts”, Péter Sárosi, leader of the organisation’s drug policy division, said. “Schools’ attention must be called to the dangers of Scientologist activities and appropriate funding and professional assistance must be granted to increase the number of professionally accredited drug prevention schemes to rid schools of Scientologists”, he said.

The controversial church, which has been banned in several countries, has denied that it is spreading its beliefs in schools, stating that the organisations named in the report operate separately from the Church of Scientology.
