It has been almost three years since The Handmaid’s Tale season five finale left viewers all over the world on tenterhooks with his cliffhanger-esque finale – and the wait is finally over.
The hit Hulu series, which is based on Margaret Atwood's seminal novel, made its highly anticipated return on April 8, allowing fans to get a step closer to finally finding out June’s fate in the upcoming sixth and final season.
Viewers will follow June (played by Elisabeth Moss) and the other handmaids rise up against Gilead – a totalitarian state that was previously the United States. The synopsis reads: “This final chapter of June's journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.”
While The Handmaid's Tale is a fictional story, some viewers and critics have drawn parallels between the oppressive government of Gilead and the Church of Scientology, particularly because the lead actress, Elizabeth, is a Scientologist herself.
However, the show's themes and inspiration are rooted in historical events, biblical passages, and American politics, not specifically Scientology - but regardless, Natalie Webster, who has since broken away from the controversial religion, thinks such parallels are being brushed off by Elisabeth.
A fan had previously commented on one of Elisabeth's social media posts, saying: "Both Gilead and Scientology believe that all outside sources (aka news) are wrong or evil… it’s just very interesting," Yahoo reported Elisabeth as responding saying that the claims were "not true at all". She reportedly continued: “Religious freedom and tolerance and understanding the truth and equal rights for every race, religion and creed are extremely important to me. The most important things to me, probably."
Additionally, Variety wrote that when The New Yorker writer Michael Schulman advised her that some fans are "distracted" by her ties to Scientology, Elisabeth responded: "People can obviously hold in their mind whatever they want to, and I can’t control that. If it’s not that, it’s going to be something else"
Speaking exclusively to Mirror US, Natalie, who also runs a very educational YouTube Channel detailing her journey of breaking away from Scientology, revealed: "I don’t think Elizabeth is seeing the connections between the Handmaid‘s Tale and Scientology.
"When I was a Scientologist, I would see cults and recognize them as such, but never make a connection between that high control group and Scientology as a high control group," Natalie claimed.
She went on to claim: "Celebrities are treated differently in Scientology unless they start questioning Scientology and want to leave.
"Elisabeth likely doesn’t know anything about the alleged abuse within Scientology of the Sea Organization(the senior-most staff within the Church of Scientology). It would be hidden from her."
The former Scientologist went on to claim how she met Elisabeth "when she was about 11 years old". Natalie shared: "I was doing a Scientology service called the Clear and she was on the same.
"I remember seeing her playing on the floor and thinking it was odd to see such a young child in there. Years later, I recognized her name as an actress," Natalie relaid.
While Natalie, whose mother was a devoted Scientologist, stressed: "I don’t know how active she is as a Scientologist. She has shown up to their major events," she added: "I do know her parents were hard-core dedicated Scientologists, and her dad has passed.
"I hold out hope that she will one day leave Scientology and free herself from those controlling beliefs."
Natalie concluded with a chilling sentiment: "The Handmaid‘s Tale shows us what can happen if we let extreme views, especially around religion, run rampant and take control."
