Speaking about her ordeal five years on, she has revealed that her father, Aravindan Balakrishnan, forced her to say she was an orphan – and let her grow up believing she did not know her parents. When in reality both her mother and father lived under the same roof, where they kept five other cult ‘comrades’ and inflicted violent and psychological attacks. When she was just five-years-old, Katy said she watched as her dad beat one of his cult members ‘within an inch of her life’ because she said she was going to leave the commune.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Katy was asked: ‘Did you know who your parents were when you were growing up?’ To which she replied, ‘no, I had no idea’ before later adding ‘I was told that if anyone was to ask me I should say I was an orphan and that I was being looked after by these people’.
Katy also said that her mother, who was in the cult, was ‘very unkind to her’. She died falling from a window in the property in 1996. Katy said: ‘She used to spy on everything that I did and encourage the other women to spy on me and then to report to him [her father]. ‘And normally reporting meant a beating’. Katy’s father was jailed for 23 years in 2015 after being found guilty of holding her prisoner and raping two cult members.
He had convinced his followers that he was a God. Members were told he could control their minds and if they didn’t follow the rules, he could strike them dead with one touch.
Before his daughter escaped, she spent 30 years inside a room with windows covered by thick curtains. She was also banned from going outside – meaning she could not go to school, meet other children or speak to anyone outside of her four walls. When she fled in 2013, she told officials she had never even seen a doctor or a dentist.
According to MailOnline, she was also told that any natural disasters in the world were due to her behaviour. She has today published a book – Caged Bird – about her ordeal, which will be in stores from today.
