Ernest Angley, Full of Grace, The Loan is With Thee

Ninety-six-year-old televangelist Ernest Angley, the charming religious fundamentalist who for years has (allegedly) examined the genitals of his Cuyahoga-Falls-based Grace Cathedral flock, is now on the hook for a fat $3.6 million after his church's broadcasting network defaulted on a loan, Cleveland.com reports.

Ravenna-based Beck Energy Corporation, the oil and gas company that loaned Angley's Winston Broadcasting Network (WBN) the dough in 2013 filed a lawsuit in Summit County last month. Not only is the suit seeking monetary damages, it wants the 5,400-seat Grace Cathedral foreclosed upon as well.

Beck loaned WBN $3.6 million expecting full repayment by 2016. WBN was granted a one-year extension, via the lawsuit, but the loan remained unpaid. Even as Angley corresponded with Beck throughout this year, promising that the sum would be paid in full, Beck never received even partial payment.

Angley's been adding weird flavors to the region's evangelical hot sauce since 1994 when he bought what would become Grace Cathedral. The best reporting on Angley and his "cult" was Bob Dyer's investigation in 2014, for the Akron Beacon Journal. It's scintillating stuff.
