Lawyer confirms alleged cult leader has fled

ABC News, Australia/September 30, 2010

A lawyer for the alleged fugitive leader of Agape Ministries has faced court in Adelaide to respond to charges against his client, including assault.

Holden Hill Magistrates Court heard Rocco Leo, 54, was actively avoiding police and had fled the country.

He did not turn up at court on Tuesday and prosecutors sought an arrest warrant, which was issued but then recalled.

Leo's lawyer asked the court for an adjournment so he could take instructions.

It is alleged Leo assaulted a former Agape associate who was taking photographs of him at Adelaide Airport last April.

Outside court the alleged victim of the assault, Philip Arbon, said his wife and child were still involved with the alleged doomsday cult.

"I was really concerned for their welfare so I basically went along to try and find what was actually going on," he said.

The case will return to court in November.
