VC pastor sentenced for real estate scam

KABC News, California/April 19, 2011

Ventura, California - A local pastor will serve a year in a work furlough program for duping an elderly man out of his property.

The sentence means the Rev. Lonnie McCowan could still preach at the Solid Rock Christian Center in Ventura.

In 2009, McCowan and his wife were arrested for crimes related to three real estate transactions.

McCowan agreed to plead guilty to three felony counts if prosecutors dropped the charges against his wife.

A Ventura County judge also ordered McCowan to pay $349,000 in restitution to the 88-year-old victim.
