Pastor held for locking up 'child sorcerers'

IOL News, South Africa/August 1, 2008

Luanda - Police in Angola have detained a 35-year-old pastor for locking up six alleged child sorcerers aged under ten and keeping them hungry in an attempt to exorcise them, the Angop news agency said on Thursday.

David Afonso Nkote from the Bet Salon religious sect locked up five boys and one girl for 13 days in the northern region of Zaire to "free them of witchcraft," Angop said.

The agency quoted the police as saying that the children were subjected to abuse, "mental and physical torture" and forced fasting during captivity.

The children were later admitted to a local hospital where they were treated for malnutrition.
