Barmy abductor's bizarre interview

The Sun, UK/August 29, 2009

Here is the full transcript of Phillip Garrido's chilling, and often incoherent, telephone interview to KCRA-TV from the El Dorado County jail where he's being held:

Interviewer: Ok thank you for getting in touch with us. So how are you doing? Can you tell me what happened? Are you doing ok?

PG: Yes, I am doing fine. In the end, this is going to be a powerful heart-warming story, one in which you're going to be really impressed, it's going to take world news. The first thing I would like to tell you and the only thing I would like to tell you right now of...

Just because for some reason I didn't get to speak with you today and I asked to speak with you is this: Contact, go to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, fifteenth floor, in San Francisco and ask for a copy of the documents that I left with them three days ago.

This is for you, the mass media, that is left in your hands. There is something powerful in them. Once you get these documents, they have a ??? in them, they an investigation in them, and they have powerful witnesses concerning my situation.

I would like to stop right there so then we can sit across from each other and then you'll have that in your hands. Because what you're going to have in your hands will take world news immediately.

Interviewer: Phillip, we are recording this I hope you don't mind.

PG: Right, I do not.

Interviewer: Ok. Can you tell us the circumstances surrounding what happened back in 1991, the whole story that leads us to today?

PG: I haven't talked to the lawyers yet so I can't do that. But I can tell you that those circumstances will begin to come to light as soon as you have those documents.

Interviewer: Ok, does this have anything to do with your place of business?

PG: No.

Interviewer: Ok.

PG:Place of business?

Interviewer: Well, just in terms of the listing of your home. It is God's something...

PG: Oh that's a church.

Interviewer: Ok. Is this all folded under that Phillip?

PG: Yes it does, that is why, the reason it is in the government's hands will stay right in the front of it. They have accepted it from me very very happily.

Interviewer: Ok let me ask you this, back in 1991, why was it that you selected this girl?

PG: I'm so sorry, let me help you, as soon as I can sit down and do this correctly because I have no desire to hold back these things in fact when this takes place you're going to be really surprised of what has happened.

It is a heart-warming story, if you would just cooperate with me, you can make the decisions, and you get the information. I am so sorry because I don't want to disappoint you right now; I just know I have to do this in cautionary fashion.

Interviewer: No I completely understand and I do appreciate speaking with you at this time. So what situation do you think you are in right now?

PG: Well I am in a very serious situation but well I can't speak with you about this I have to wait. I guarantee you as time goes on you will get the pieces of the story. When you get these documents in your hands, you are going to fall over.

Interviewer: When can I get these documents Phillip?

PG: Well it is the Federal Government; it is on the fifteenth floor of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I gave it to one of the agents and so they have it now and go there immediately and you ask them for a copy of those.

Interviewer: Two days ago when you were in Berkeley and you were contacted by some people with law enforcement, can you tell me what you said to them? Did you feel somewhat relieved that they had found you? How did you feel Phillip?

PG:I feel much better now. It is a process that needed to take place. Please try and grab those documents because they will do a lot for you. And then like I said they're going to be a part of the trial so, because this is going to turn into a major trial.

Interviewer: Phillip, what do you hope happens once the documents are out, once the trial begins or is over, what do you hope comes from this for you?

PG:Well, let me tell you this. When I went to the San Francisco Bureau and I am not avoiding the question, I am just trying to make sure that you understand something; I was accompanied by two children that are Jaycee Lee Dugard's two children that we had, so you know the government had them.

So they sort of accompanied me elsewhere, to Berkeley ??? In the legal system so to really sort this out please get those documents, they will not disappoint you, they will absolutely... I told you right away, you are going to be in control of something that is going take the world's attention.

Interviewer: Right so Phillip, I know that you served some time in the 90s. What have you been doing all this time in terms of employment, I mean what have you been doing, what keeps you busy?

PG: The last several years I completely turned my life around and you're going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, from the victim.

If you take a step at a time you will fall over backwards and in the end you're going to find the most powerful heart-warming story revealing that something used to be understood and that is as far as I can go. I really want to help you but I also need to make sure that the media is also protected.

Interviewer: I understand that. Would we be getting most this, what you are saying, would we be getting most of this from Jaycee?

PG: I guess she would also handle back the truth... Hum, this is what we are going to do, we are going to try and make this, hum, because I just, hum, the Department of ??? Wait til you read that document. My life has been... Wait til you hear the story of what took place at this house and you are going to be absolutely impressed.

It's a disgusting thing that took place from the end to the beginning. But I turned my life completely around, and to be able to understand it you have to start, I'm so sorry. I want to help you further but I also need to protect the sheriff officer, and I need to protect the government and I need to protect the rights of Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Interviewer: I understand that. Can you at least share with me what you've told law enforcements?

PG: I haven't told them anything, but I will not speak to them until I have a, oh well what I shared with law enforcements you'll have in those documents, I didn't tell them anything else but what is in those documents and they were really impressed.

Interviewer: When they first met with you recently did you tell them that you did have a hand in taking Jaycee back in 1991?

PG:Oh no no no, that was just the ???. It is going to lead to what actually happened and it is going to explain something that humans have not understood well.

Interviewer: I understand that Phillip. I am just saying, you're mentioning that it is going to be a heart-warming story; can you give me an overview as to is it a love story? Is it a story about children? What...

PG: It is a story about turning a person's life around and having those two children, those two girls, they slept in my arms every single night. (crying) I never touched them, you just have to... do what I ask you to because... I can't go any further because if I do you know I'll go too far.

People are going to be coming forward at this trial and that's not all. I am going to give them at least in a state of shock when you see how many hundreds of thousands of people are going to come out and start testifying about something.

Just do me a favour and follow the protocol that I asked you to follow because you make your own decisions from now and what you want to do; this is not for me, you will find out that this is not a play or a way of monopolising anyone. It is a very well constructed and powerful written disclosure. Please do that and then we'll work from there.

Interviewer: Let me ask you this before I go; are the children okay and everybody in the house?

PG:Absolutely, the youngest one was born and from that moment everything turned around. People are going to testify to these things.

Interviewer: We were just somewhat concerned about the lack of perhaps some sound medical attention for them?

PG: Absolutely, that is absolutely because we didn't have the finances and we were very concerned. You have to get into the, the federal government was involved because they're being pursued by hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people who were suing them with law suits over hum...

Just read the documents and we'll go from there. Thank you sir, thank you, god bless you for allowing me to talk to you.

Interviewer: Phillip, thank you for the phone call.

PG:I wanted to see you, you know when it happened.

Interviewer: I did not know you wanted to see me.

PG: Yes I did I don't know what happened but thank you so much for allowing me to talk to you.

Interviewer: We'll work on that.

PG:And I am not going to play with the media, I am going to leave this with you because you are the first person here I was able to talk to and I am going to stop right there. Thank you sir.

Interviewer: Have a good day.
