It was a discovery that shocked all those who witnessed the horror that had been happening in one family home.
It was an incest cult of nightmares was uncovered and had been started by two great-great grandparents in a remote farming valley, away from the eyes of the world.
Their descendants were left unable to speak, or see - chained to generations of sickening inbreeding. When they were finally discovered by social services, staff were horrified to find 38 people living in squalor, all related to one another.
The severely abused children were disabled beyond the point of being able to speak. On moving to foster homes, their new families noticed hyper sexual behaviour. Years later, one of the parents posted to Facebook with the nauseating message "Love Makes a Family", according to the New Zealand Herald.
For the Colts - a court given pseudonym - the hell began with June and Tim, who married in New Zealand in 1966 and emigrated to Australia. They had seven children, with Martha being the youngest. Each child in the group of 38 had suffered years of sexual abuse, perpetrated by brothers, sisters, cousins, fathers, an uncle and a grandfather over four generations.
The Colts first came to the attention of authorities in June 2010. Over two years seven “risk of significant harm reports” were issued, mostly relating to neglect, failure to seek necessary medical attention and failure to ensure the children attended school.
Social services finally managed to get into the makeshift camp where the family lived in 2010. It had no running water or toilets. The children were unable to comb their hair, did not know how to use toilet paper, could not brush their teeth and ate with their hands.
Dirt covered the caravan's cooking facilities, vegetables rotted in the fridge and the bedsheets appeared to be soiled with dirt. A kangaroo slept on one of the children's beds.
Many of the children were visibly deformed, with misaligned eyes, low ears and looking decades older than their actual age. Only Rhonda's five-year-old daughter was found not to have been fathered by a blood relative. All other children were the product of incest.
Betty, Martha and Raylene all deny their children are the product of incest, despite the fact that genetic testing has proved this is incorrect.
Three of the girls aged seven, eight and nine claimed their uncle, Charlie Colt, was also their father. He lived on the property when the children were removed. The nine year-old also claimed Charlie Colt had sex with her.
It's believed the family patriarch, Timothy Colt, who died in 2009, fathered children with one of his daughters and one of his granddaughters.
Five of the boys removed also admitted to torturing animals on the farm including puppies and cats. They also said they had mutilated the genitals of animals.
Initially the family complied with a request in June 2012 from social services to improve their living conditions but a month later 12 children, all cousins, ranging in age from five to 15 years, were removed by police after the authorities concluded they would be at risk of harm if they remained at the property.
All of the removed children will remain in care until the age of 18. The case came to light after the children's court of New South Wales took the unusual step of publishing its judgment in the case.
In 2021, evidence at the trials of other Colt siblings attested it was likely Martha's father Tim Colt, also was the father of his daughter Betty's 13 children.
Martha, who openly shared a "marital bed" with her brother Charlie, had given birth to five of her brother's children. Martha's trial heard her children were likely fathered by Charlie, her own father Tim and another brother.
Three family members, Roderick, Martha and Derek Colt, filed notices of intention to appeal in 2020, all of which have since expired. Although 80 charges originally levelled against eight Colts – including incest, child sexual abuse, indecency against a child and perjury – many were dropped.
Charlie Colt, who originally faced 27 charges was found not guilty on two charges and acquitted, with the balance being withdrawn. However, his brother Roderick was found guilty of raping his niece and half-sister Petra.
And it emerged during his trial Petra was also his half-sister by virtue of the fact she was the daughter of Roderick's sister Betty and their father Tim.
Although all eight family members were imprisoned after their 2018 arrest, only half have subsequently received custodial sentences.
Like Martha, her older sisters Betty and Rhonda ,and Betty's daughter Raylene, were also charged with lying about who was the father of her children. In 2018, Betty Colt posted on Facebook a picture of herself with two female relatives branded with the message "Love Makes a Family".
Rhonda received a 14 month intensive corrections order (ICO) for perjury which expired in 2021. Raylene was sentenced to a 16 month ICO for perjury, which also expired in 2021.
Betty was convicted of four counts of perjury, one of lying under oath and one of perverting the course of justice and jailed for 14 months.
